Over the last few notes we have discussed the signs and symptoms that could suggest you have an underactive thyroid and some of the possible causes of this. Today i want to talk about some possible answers…..
So what are the solutions?
Well it may first be advisable to perform the Basal temperature test (click on the link below for details on how to do this simple test)
You could ask you doctor to test you. If you are not happy with the results and feel you are hypothyroid then you can get a private blood test that will test all of the thyroid hormones. Genova Diagnotics Europe (www.gdx.uk.net) offer a total thyroid screen test.
Then you need to take action
Eat foods high in iodine, these tend to be foods found in the sea, such as kelp, saltwater fish, sea vegetables and seafood. Most salt now has added Iodine; eggs can be a good source if the hen
s are reared on a feed high in iodine.
Eat foods high in Selenium – Conversion of T4 into its active form of T3 is selenium dependant.
Brazil nuts are the best eating a few a day can be enough to keep levels high. Seafood, brown rice and chicken can be other good sources. As always it depends on the quality of the soil the original animal feed comes from or the foods were grown in.
Also supplement with Magnesium and Zinc (using the Citrate form)
Make sure Goitrogenic foods such as cruciferous vegetables are lightly cooked as they are said to inhibit the uptake of iodine, this is generally only a problem if eaten in large quantities. I have h
ad clients told to steer clear of these super vegetables. This is unnecessary unless you are very deficient in Iodine.
Avoid Soy and Gluten based products – for good – no 80/20 rules here – if your intolera
nt the ill effects from one slip can last in your body for up to 6 months.
Having an underactive Thyroid can make life seem like an up hill struggle, especially
for those only mildly effected and there for out of the medical professions parameters for treatme
nt. Buy doing simple tests and fuelling your body with the right nutrients a balanced thyroid can be restored.
